Frequently asked questions
Is this an official Isle of Man government app?
No. IoM Theory is an independent study aid. It isn't made by or affiliated with the Isle of Man Government, and its questions are original. Lessons and questions are written from the Isle of Man Highway Code and public guidance on gov.im.
Does it cover the hazard perception test?
The app explains the hazard perception part of the real test (14 clips, pass mark 44 out of 75, taken at the same sitting) but doesn't include the video clips themselves, so practise those with the official materials too.
How closely do the mock exams match the real test?
The Full Mock uses the real format: 50 questions in 57 minutes, with a pass mark of 43. Questions are drawn from every topic each time. Quick Mock, Smart Practice and the Dynamic Exam let you practise in shorter sessions.
I'm learning to ride a motorcycle. Does the app cover that?
Yes. Go to Profile → Study mode and choose Motorcycle. Rider questions are then mixed into every exam. Car mode leaves them out.
Do I need an internet connection or an account?
No to both. Everything works offline, there's no sign-up, and the app has no adverts or tracking.
Will I lose my progress if I change phone?
Your progress is stored only on your device, so it isn't synced between devices. It is kept in your normal iPhone or iPad backup, so restoring a backup to a new device should bring it with you.
How do I reset my progress?
Go to Profile → Reset all progress and confirm. This clears your XP, streaks, badges, completed lessons and exam history. It can't be undone.
How up to date is the content?
The content reflects the Isle of Man Highway Code and test format as of 2026. Rules do change, so always check gov.im before your test. If you think something is out of date, please email us.
Which devices are supported?
iPhone and iPad running iOS 17 or later.
